Coronary Artery Disease

Untitled design.png
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is common and
IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH

  • CAD affects approximately 14 million Americans and is the leading cause of death in the industrialized world. In the US CAD results in over 900,000 heart attacks and 650,000 deaths annually.

  • CAD results in a large burden($109 billion annually) to overall health costs. The costs are expected to rise due to the epidemic of obesity and diabetes.

  • Significant heart muscle and small blood vessel damage [Microvascular obstruction (MVO)] occurs in more than 50% of patients with STEMI.

  • Microvascular obstruction (MVO) is a major barrier that precludes optimal outcomes in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI).

  • PCI is the most frequently performed procedure to treat CAD.

  • Guidewires are extremely thin, radiologically detectable wires that are the first device utilized to create a pathway in PCI procedures. Currently approved guidewires are inert.

  1. Rationale:
  • Adenosine is an endogenous compound that reverses the multiple mechanisms responsible for MVO

  • Numerous clinical studies show that intravenous infusions of adenosine significantly reduce heart attack size after PCI and improve survival.

2. Drawback:
  • Short half life (< 1 second) in blood requires large doses to be infused which may include unpleasant side effects.

3. Solution:
  • Continuous delivery of adenosine at the site of PCI utilizing a novel guidewire platform and coating-- ADENOWIRE ™
